Margery Gosnell-Qua – Capturing Light, Memory, and the Spirit of Place
At Clic, we’re always drawn to artists who see the world through a lens of quiet beauty—those who are not only gifted in their craft but also deeply tuned in to the feeling of a moment, the texture of a place, and the poetry of light. We’re thrilled to introduce the work of Margery Gosnell-Qua, now available online and at our St. Barths store.
Margery’s paintings speak with a soft, confident voice. Her work captures the stillness of a harbor at rest, the movement of breeze across water, and the warmth of sun-drenched days. These are not just landscapes—they are invitations to pause, reflect, and feel.
Margery Gosnell-Qua lives and works on the East End of Long Island, where she spent summers as a child—an experience that continues to influence her work. She earned a BFA in Painting from Syracuse University in 1984, followed by an MFA in Painting and an MS in Art History from Pratt Institute in 1996.
Her work reflects a unity to the environment, capturing subtle rhythms in land, water, and sky. Her palette is soft but expressive—shades of seafoam, terracotta, dusky rose, and sun-washed neutrals create an atmosphere that’s both grounded and dreamlike.
We’re proud to carry a curated selection of Margery’s paintings, many of which were inspired by her time in the Caribbean and coastal towns. These works feel right at home in St. Barths—imbued with the same sense of calm, warmth, and openness that the island evokes. Each painting is hand painted and due to this nature each one has slight variations which makes them unique! Below are a few highlights from the collection now available at Clic:
This series captures the serenity and soft light of Lorient, a picturesque neighborhood on the northern coast of St. Barths. In “Lorient 2,” Margery uses a soft, abstracted approach— reduced to blocks of color and shadow, creating a dreamlike composition that feels familiar and faraway at once. The light is diffused and warm, evoking a moment just before sunset when everything is hushed and golden.
“Rogers Beach” is one of the most tranquil pieces in the collection. The composition is minimal, with horizontal bands of sand, sea, and sky. Layers of color are softly brushed, allowing the viewer to feel the warmth of the shore and the stillness of the moment. It’s a painting that invites deep breaths and quiet contemplation.
A beautifully observed moment of connection, “Beach Conversation” features loosely rendered figures, seated and mid-dialogue, shaded by the sun. The gestures are relaxed, the atmosphere casual and warm. You can feel the soft heat of the day, the rhythm of conversation, and the sense of timelessness that comes from slow summer afternoons.
In “Bathers,” Margery captures a peaceful intimacy between a group of figures resting near the water’s edge. The bodies are simplified and abstracted, yet their placement tells a story of comfort and familiarity. The surrounding colors—hints of spink, ocean blue, and white—create a bucolic ambiance. It’s a painting about the universal experience of sun-warmed skin and post-swim serenity.
Margery’s “Guards Resting” The color palette shifts toward earthy ochres and terracottas, bringing a sense of grounded stillness. It feels like a sunlit afternoon rendered in memory and tone.
Whether you’re decorating a beachside home, refreshing a city apartment, or simply seeking a piece of art that speaks to a sense of place, Margery’s paintings offer something timeless. They’re windows to landscapes both real and imagined—rooted in observation, lifted by memory.
