Oil Painting Breakneck, by Jesse Alexander

A sweeping, atmospheric view of Breakneck Ridge near Cold Spring, this Spring 2025 oil painting by Jesse Alexander captures the Hudson Valley as it begins to reawaken.

A winding river cuts gently through rolling green hills, guiding the eye across the composition in a quiet, continuous rhythm. The palette is soft and restrained—cool greens, muted blues, and pale sky tones—evoking the freshness of early spring, when the landscape is just beginning to bloom. In the foreground, loose gestures of color suggest wild growth and shifting terrain, adding a sense of immediacy to the otherwise expansive, tranquil scene.

Alexander’s brushwork balances observation with abstraction, allowing the forms to remain fluid and open. The result is less a fixed viewpoint and more a lingering impression of place—spacious, calm, and quietly luminous.

Framed in natural wood, the painting brings a sense of openness and serenity into the home, offering a contemplative window onto one of New York’s most iconic landscapes.
