Kate On Stool with Toy Bike by Sam Haskins
There are two spreads in Cowboy Kate of Kate in a contemplative pose sitting on her stool. In one she is next to a Russian doll and a silhouette of herself in a doorway. In the other she is next to a toy bicycle. This print is an alternative treatment of the two book spreads. The book reference images are included in this post.
“...considered one of the most impressive examples of 20th-century black-and-white photographic strorytelling."
Wall Street Journal (Commenting on the sale of the Cowboy Kate maquette at Christies in London 2007)
Print Specs: This is a 12” x 16” (29.0cm x 40.0cm) print, a classic size for the archive. A later double weight silver gelatin print, printed by Sam in-house c.1980.
Condition: The print is in excellent condition. The images are not generic, apart from the book references, they are produced from the print referred to in this listing.
Rarity: There are only five known copies of this print with this crop at this scale and a further four with a slightly different crop of Kate on her stool. This is not the pose in the book where Kate is looking at the camera but Sam would not have not have made five prints if he didn’t feel it had equal or greater merit. It was an era of his career that produced an an embarrassment of riches when it came to picture editing.
